Game Overview
Flip 7 is a popular French card game, traditionally played with 3-6 players and a standard deck of 52 playing cards. The objective of the game is to reach or exceed 200 points before any other player.
Objective
The goal in Flip 7 is to reach or surpass 200 points before any other player. Points are earned by completing certain combinations of cards, as well as through strategic use of special cards.
Setup
To set up the game, shuffle the deck and deal 7 cards to each player. The remaining cards form a draw pile in the center of the table. The player to the left of the dealer goes first, and play continues clockwise.
How to Play
Starting the Game: The player to the left of the dealer starts the game by discarding one card face-up into a discard pile. This card sets the initial number for the round.
Example: If the discarded card is a 3, the round starts with the number 3.
Playing a Number: On their turn, a player may play a card from their hand that matches the current number. The player adds the value of the played card to their score and takes the top card from the draw pile, starting a new discard pile if necessary. If the player has no cards that match the current number, they must pass their turn.
Example: If the current number is 3 and a player has a 3 in their hand, they would play it, add 3 points to their score, and draw a new card.
Playing a Special Card: Certain cards have special effects:
Flip 7: This card instantly ends the round and awards the player 50 points. If multiple Flip 7s are played in the same round, only the player who played the highest Flip 7 (Ace is high) receives points.
Stop: This card forces the player who drew it to discard their hand and end their turn. They receive no points for the round.
Ciblez un joueur (Target Player): This card allows the player to choose another player still in the round. The targeted player must immediately discard their hand and receive no points for the round. If the player choosing this card is the only one remaining in the round, they must target themselves.
Seconde Chance: This card protects the player from being targeted by a Ciblez un joueur card or being forced to discard their hand with a Stop card in the same round. If a player has a Seconde Chance in their hand and is targeted or forced to discard, they can play the Seconde Chance instead.
Trois à la suite (Three of a Kind): This card allows the player to choose another player still in the round. The targeted player must discard their hand, and the player who played the Three of a Kind takes the top cards from the draw pile equal to the number of cards in the targeted player's hand. The player who played the Three of a Kind scores points for the cards taken.
Ending the Round: When a player reaches or exceeds 200 points, the round ends immediately. If no one has reached 200 points, the round continues until a Flip 7 is played, a Stop or Ciblez un joueur card forces a player to discard, or all players but one have passed their turn. In this case, the remaining player is the winner of the round and scores the difference between their score and 200.
New Round: After a round ends, all used cards are set aside, and a new round begins with the player to the left of the dealer. The discard pile is not reshuffled into the draw pile. If the draw pile is empty, the discarded cards are shuffled to form a new draw pile.
Scoring and End of Game
At the end of each game, the player with the highest score is declared the winner. In case of a tie, a new round is played to determine the winner.
Common Variants
There may be regional variations in the rules of Flip 7, but the basic structure and card effects remain consistent. Some versions may use different numbers of cards per player or different starting numbers for the rounds.
