Game Overview

Euchre is a popular card game that originated in Germany and has since spread across North America, primarily in the Midwest and North-East United States, as well as in parts of Canada and the United Kingdom. It is typically played by four players in fixed partnerships, with a deck of 25 cards and an optional joker. You can find a 24-card euchre deck on Amazon here.

Objective

The primary objective of Euchre is to win at least three out of five tricks in a round, with an added bonus for winning all five. The team that reaches a predetermined score first wins the game.

Setup

The game begins with the players sitting around the table in fixed partnerships, with partners opposite each other. The dealer is selected at random and passes the deck to the player on their right, who may either cut the cards or "bump" them, indicating that they should be dealt as they are. The dealer then shuffles the cards and deals five cards to each player in two rounds. The dealer discards the remaining four cards face-down.

How to Play

The player to the dealer's left begins the trick by leading a card, and each player in clockwise order must follow suit if possible. If a player does not have a card of the led suit, they may play any card. The trick is won by the highest card of the led suit, unless a trump card is played, in which case the highest trump wins. The winner of the trick leads to the next one.

After the cards are dealt, each player in turn has the option to make trump by accepting the up-card's suit or passing. If all four players pass, the up-card is turned face-down, and a second round begins where any suit may be made trump except for the suit of the up-card. If the Benny (joker or two of spades) is turned up, the dealer's team are automatically the makers, and the dealer must choose a trump suit without looking at their cards.

Any player may announce that they are playing alone after trump has been made, in which case their partner puts their cards face-down and takes no part in the play. It is possible for both a maker and a defender to play alone, resulting in a game with only two active players.

Scoring and End of Game

The scores are as follows:

  • If the makers win 3 or 4 tricks, they score one point.
  • If the makers win all 5 tricks, they score two points.
  • If the makers take fewer than three tricks, they are said to be "euchred," and the defenders score two points.
  • If a member of the makers' team is playing alone and wins all 5 tricks, the team scores 4 points instead of 2.
  • If a member of the defenders' team is playing alone and succeeds in winning at least 3 tricks, thereby euchring the makers, the defenders score 4 points instead of 2.

The game is typically played to 11 points, with each team keeping score using a spare 5 and 6 from the pack (as these cards are not used in the game). The cards are arranged on the table so that the number of pips showing shows the team's current score.

Common Variants

There are several variations of Euchre, including the St. Austell league, where the dealer bids first, and the game is played to a target of 21 points. In some versions, a player who has passed in the round in which trumps were made is not allowed to play alone, preventing a player from trapping an opponent by passing with a good hand and then playing alone to score 4 points for a euchre.

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Failing to follow suit: When a player leads a suit, every other player must play a card of the same suit if they have one.
  2. Not understanding the trump suit: The trump suit is determined by the up-card and changes the ranking of the cards. The highest trump always beats the second-highest trump, regardless of the suit led.
  3. Not bidding correctly: Each player has the opportunity to accept the up-card's suit as the trump suit or pass. If all players pass, the up-card is turned face-down, and a second round begins where any suit may be made trump except for the suit of the up-card.
  4. Not remembering the objective: The main goal is to win at least three out of five tricks, with an added bonus for winning all five. If a team fails to win at least three tricks, they are euchred, and the opposing team scores two points.
