"Cockroach Poker" is a bluffing card game built around creatures nobody likes. It uses a dedicated deck of 64 cards showing 8 different motives in 8 colors, and it works from two players upwards, with a dedicated two-player variant described in the rulebook.

Objective

The objective of the game is for players to palm off as many cards as possible on other players by offering a card and correctly or incorrectly stating the creature pictured on it. The player who misjudges the other ends up with the card. The first player who gets four of the same card palmed off on them, or who doesn't have any cards left when it's their turn to offer a card, loses the game.

Setup

The 64 cards are shuffled and dealt out face down to all players. There is no draw pile and no stock: the whole deck ends up in players' hands. The two-player game has its own setup, covered further down.

How to Play

In each round, the player going first (let's call him Marc) picks a card from his hand. He lays it face down on the table, slides it over to another player of his choice (let's say Anna), and states, for example, "Cockroach."

Anna has two options:

  1. Accept the Card: Anna decides to accept the card. Before picking it up, she says loudly "true" or "false." If she believes or doubts correctly, Marc has to take the card. If she believes or doubts wrongly, however, she has to take the card herself.

  2. Pass the Card: Anna decides not to accept the card but to pass it on. In this case, she is allowed to peek at the card before sliding it on to another player (perhaps Eva). Additionally, Anna must either confirm Marc's statement ("Cockroach") or make a new claim, e.g., "Stink Bug." Now Eva has two options, and so on. A card may only ever be passed to a player who has not seen it yet, so it can travel around the table until every player has had it once. The last player to receive it no longer has a choice: they only have Option 1, accept the card, and must judge whether the claim of the player who passed it to them was true or false. The player who the card is palmed off on takes it and places it face up on the table in front of themselves. This player starts the next round by offering a card from their hand.

Scoring and End of Game

The game is over:

  • when a player gets four-of-a-kind (four cards with the same creature, e.g., four cockroaches) palmed off on them. This player has lost. The other players share in the victory.
  • as soon as a player with no more cards in their hand has to start a round. This player cannot offer a card and has lost. All other players share the victory here as well.

For a two-player game, 10 cards are removed from the shuffled deck without being looked at before the cards are dealt. Passing a card on (Option 2) is naturally left out, so the receiving player always has to commit to "true" or "false". In this case, the game is over:

  • when a player gets five-of-a-kind (five cards with the same creature, e.g., 5 cockroaches) palmed off on them.
  • as soon as a player with no more cards in their hand has to start a round.

In both cases, the player described has lost.

Common Variants

The rulebook itself covers one official variant: the two-player game, with ten cards removed before the deal, no passing, and five-of-a-kind instead of four as the losing threshold. Beyond that, groups are free to invent their own house rules.

Why This Game Is So Popular

Cockroach Poker's popularity stems from its simple yet engaging mechanics that allow for strategic bluffing and quick thinking. The game's unique twist on poker-style gameplay, combined with the somewhat unpleasant creatures depicted on the cards, creates a fun and memorable experience for players. The tension peaks when one player already has three cockroaches face up in front of them and everyone at the table starts trying to slide them a fourth: a single wrong call ends the game for that player, and everybody else shares the win.

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

Beginners should be aware of the importance of bluffing effectively and accurately judging other players' claims. Overconfidence in one's bluffing abilities can lead to losing cards unnecessarily, while doubting one's own claims too frequently can result in taking unnecessary cards.

FAQ

  1. Can I use my own cards to play Cockroach Poker? No, the official Cockroach Poker game comes with its own unique set of cards. Using different cards may affect the game's balance and fairness.

  2. What changes in a two-player game? Three things: ten cards are removed from the shuffled deck unseen before dealing, passing a card on is dropped entirely, and you need five cards of the same creature in front of you to lose instead of four.

  3. Can I play Cockroach Poker with children? The game's theme may not be suitable for very young children due to the unpleasant creatures depicted on the cards. It's recommended to use discretion when introducing the game to children.

  4. What happens if I run out of cards during the game? Having an empty hand is only fatal at one specific moment: when it is your turn to start a round. If you cannot offer a card then, you lose and everyone else shares the victory. Running out mid-round is harmless in itself, since you can still be handed cards by other players.

  5. Can I pass a card multiple times in one round? No. A card can only be passed to a player who has not seen it yet, so each player handles it at most once. When it reaches the last player who has not seen it, that player must accept it and call "true" or "false" — it is never returned to the player who started the round.
