The Mind: A Cooperative Game of Synchronization
The Mind is a unique and engaging cooperative card game that challenges players to work together in perfect harmony. Originally designed by Wolfgang Warsch, this game has quickly gained popularity due to its simple yet intricate gameplay mechanics, requiring players to develop a collective sense of timing. The Mind can be played with 2-4 players and requires only the base game components: 100 number cards (1-100), 12 level cards (1 - 12), 5 life tokens, and 3 throwing stars.
Objective of the Game
The objective of The Mind is to work as a team to complete all twelve levels, each representing an increasing difficulty. The lower a card's value, the sooner it should be played. For example, a 5 would be played quickly, while an 80 might take some time. Over the course of the game, players will become increasingly synchronized in their sense of time, allowing them to estimate when specific number cards should be played more accurately.
Preparation
Before starting the game, the team is given a certain number of lives and throwing stars, which are laid out openly on the table. The remaining lives and throwing stars are set aside at the edge of the table for later use. A certain number of level cards are stacked in ascending order and placed as an open deck (with level 1 right at the top) alongside the lives and the throwing stars. Unused levels are returned to the box.
- For 2 players: levels 1 - 12, 2 lives, 1 throwing star
- For 3 players: levels 1 - 10, 3 lives, 1 throwing star
- For 4 players: levels 1 - 8, 4 lives, 1 throwing star
The 100 number cards are shuffled. Each player is dealt one card (for level 1) which they hold in their hand so that none of the other players can see it. The remaining number cards are placed face down at the edge of the table.
How to Play
At the start of each level, all players place one hand palm down on the table. Once everyone is ready, they remove their hands from the table and the game begins. It's crucial that this collective concentration on the level is maintained for successful survival! As the game progresses, players are permitted to refocus their concentration at any time by saying "stop," with everyone placing a hand on the table to regroup before continuing play.
The cards held in each player's hand must be placed in the center of the table in ascending order. The lowest (available) card must be put down first, then the second-lowest (available) card must be placed on top, and so on. Cards are always put down one at a time, with no specific turn order among players.
Whoever believes they have the lowest card currently available, simply plays it. Importantly, none of the players is permitted to disclose any of their card values or show them to another player. There must be absolutely no consultation between the players, and no secret signals either! If the players place all their cards in the correct sequence (in ascending order), they have completed the current level!
Counting Points and End of Game
Once a team has successfully completed a level, they are rewarded with additional lives or throwing stars, as depicted on the lower right corner of the level card. The game continues in this fashion until either all levels have been completed, resulting in a collective victory, or the team loses its last life, marking an unfortunate failure.
Variants and Common Mistakes to Avoid
If someone plays a number card in the wrong order, the game is halted immediately by whichever player (or players) holds a lower value card than the one played. This causes the team to lose one of its lives, and a life token must be taken away and placed at the edge of the table. Next, any cards being held which are lower than the last one played must be set aside. Then the team refocuses their concentration and continues with the current level (it isn't started again!).
At any point during a level, a player can suggest that a throwing star be played by raising a hand. If all the players agree, the throwing star is deployed, and each player discards the lowest card in their hand by placing it face up to one side. One throwing star is then set aside, and all players refocus before continuing play.
It's essential for new players to avoid discussing or revealing card values during gameplay. This will only hinder the team's progress as they strive to develop a collective sense of timing. Additionally, players should focus on playing their lowest cards first rather than holding onto them in hopes of finding higher cards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I talk about my cards during gameplay?
- No, discussing card values or showing cards to other players is strictly forbidden.
What happens if we play a card out of sequence?
- The team loses one life, and any lower-valued cards must be set aside before continuing the level.
Can I use throwing stars strategically during gameplay?
- Yes, by raising a hand and receiving agreement from all players, you can play a throwing star, forcing everyone to discard their lowest card.
How do I prepare for The Mind if it's my first time playing?
- Start by reading through the rules, then jump right in and avoid looking at the box's end of playing instructions before your first session so you can discover the game's secrets yourself!
Is there a recommended starting point for new players?
- It's best to begin with the default configuration of lives and throwing stars based on the number of players. If you rarely play this kind of game, read the note in the box at the end of the playing rules now to ensure you're prepared for the initial challenge.
