Uno Rules: Classic Game and Variants

Game Overview

Uno is a popular card game that was first introduced by Merchants of Venus Inc in 1971, but gained widespread fame when it was redesigned and distributed by Mattel in 1989. The game can be played with 2 to 10 players and requires a standard Uno deck of cards containing 108 cards, which you can easily purchase on Amazon.

Objective

The objective of the game is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards by matching them with cards from the discard pile. The goal is not only to finish each round first but also to score points based on the cards your opponents are left holding at the end of each round. The first player to reach 500 points wins the game.

Setup

1. Shuffle the Uno deck and deal seven cards to each player. The remainder of the deck forms the draw pile.
2. Place the top card from the draw pile on the table to start the discard pile. If it's an action card, follow its specific instructions before continuing with the setup or gameplay.
3. The player who draws the highest card (or any card with a symbol as zero) deals the cards and starts the first round.

How to Play

1. Gameplay moves clockwise around the table. On your turn, you must play a card from your hand that matches either the number, color, or symbol of the top card on the discard pile. If you can't make a match, you must draw a card from the draw pile.
2. If you play an action card (Draw Two, Reverse, Skip, Wild, or Wild Draw Four), follow its specific instructions. For example, if you play a Reverse card, the direction of play reverses (from left to right or vice versa).
3. If you have no playable cards and draw one from the draw pile, you can choose not to play it immediately. In this case, you cannot play any other cards in the same turn.
4. When you have only one card left, yell "Uno" to indicate this. If you don't and another player catches you before their turn, you must draw two cards.
5. Play continues until a player gets rid of all their cards or the draw pile is depleted. In the latter case, the discard pile is reshuffled, and play continues.

Scoring and End of Game

1. At the end of each round, players score points for the remaining cards in their opponents' hands. Number cards are worth their face value, while special cards have specific point values (Draw Two: 20 points, Reverse: 20 points, Skip: 20 points, Wild: 50 points, and Wild Draw Four: 50 points).
2. The round score is added to each player's total, and a new round begins if no player has reached 500 points. If a player does reach 500 points, they are declared the winner.
3. Alternatively, you can choose to keep a running tally of points each player accumulates throughout the game, with the player who ends up with the lowest score at 500 points being the winner.

Common Variants

1. Uno Freeze: When a player plays a Wild or Wild Draw Four card, other players can't play any more action cards until someone plays another Wild or Wild Draw Four card.
2. Uno Attack: Players draw extra cards when they shout "Uno." The first player to yell "Uno" draws two cards, the next player draws three cards, and so on until someone runs out of cards. That player then gets to draw all the remaining cards from the draw pile as a reward.
3. Uno Duel: Two players face off in a one-on-one game where each player draws an extra card at the start. The first player to get rid of their cards wins the round, and the winner of two rounds is declared the overall winner.

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

1. Forgetting to yell "Uno" when you have one card left, resulting in having to draw extra cards.
2. Playing an action card that isn't allowed or playing it on the wrong card, which can lead to penalties or disputes among players.
3. Not keeping track of your points throughout the game, which can cause confusion and mistakes when determining the winner.
