"Love Letter" is a popular, fast-paced, and strategic card game designed by Seiji Kanai. It is suitable for 2 to 4 players and requires only 16 game cards, 4 reference cards, and tokens of affection. The game is simple enough to learn in minutes but offers enough depth to keep players engaged and entertained for hours.

Objective

The objective of Love Letter is to win the heart of Princess Annette by getting your love letter to her before your opponents. Each player takes on the role of a suitor seeking to win the princess's affection, and the game is played in a series of rounds, with the winner of each round receiving a token of affection. The first player to accumulate a specific number of tokens based on the number of players wins the game.

Setup

To set up the game, shuffle the 16 cards to form a face-down draw deck. Remove the top card of the deck from the game without looking at it. If you are playing a two-player game, take three more cards from the top of the deck and place them to the side, face up. These cards will not be used during this round. Each player draws one card from the deck, which represents their hand and is kept secret from the other players. The player who was most recently on a date goes first (if tied, the younger player wins the tie).

How to Play

Love Letter is played in a series of rounds, with each round representing one day. On your turn, you draw the top card from the deck and add it to your hand. Then, you choose one of the two cards in your hand and discard it face up in front of you. You must apply the card's effect, even if it is bad for you. All discarded cards remain in front of the player who discarded them, and they should be overlapped so that it is clear in which order they were discarded. This helps players to figure out which cards other players might be holding. Once you finish applying the card's effect, the turn passes to the player on your left.

Scoring and End of Game

A round ends if the deck is empty at the end of a turn, or if all players but one are out of the round. In the former case, all players still in the round reveal their hands: the player holding the highest ranked person wins the round, and in case of a tie the player who discarded the highest total value of cards wins. In the latter case, the remaining player wins the round. The winner receives a token of affection. Shuffle all 16 cards together, and play a new round following all of the setup rules. The winner of the previous round goes first, because the princess speaks kindly of him or her at breakfast. A player wins the game after winning a number of tokens based on the number of players: 2 Players: 7 tokens, 3 Players: 5 tokens, 4 players: 4 tokens.

Common Variants

Love Letter exists in several editions, including a Premium edition, a Legend of the Five Rings edition and a Batman Boxed Edition. The rules described here are those of the base game.

A Fun Fact or Record

The official rules include a short section on honesty: a player could cheat when chosen with the Guard, or fail to discard the Countess when holding the King or the Prince. The rulebook's advice is simply not to play with people who cheat at light, fun games. Another charming detail: the winner of the previous round goes first in the next one, because the princess speaks kindly of him or her at breakfast.

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

One common mistake beginners make is not following the card effects strictly. It is important to remember that you must apply the card's effect, even if it is bad for you. Another mistake is focusing too much on specific cards rather than trying to understand the overall strategy of the game.
