Fluxx: The Ever-Changing Card Game

Game Overview

Fluxx is a card game created by Andrew Loomis and Lawrence Manning, first published in 1995. It is a game for 2-6 players, requiring a deck of 100 Fluxx cards, which includes Basic Rules, Meta Rule, Creepers, Keepers, New Rules, Action, and Goal cards.

Objective

The objective of Fluxx is to be the first player to fulfill a specific Goal condition. The game's unique feature is its dynamic nature, as the rules and objectives change throughout the game.

Setup

To set up the game, place the Basic Rules card in the center of the table. Shuffle the deck and deal three cards to each player. The remainder of the deck forms the Draw pile, placed next to the Basic Rules. At the start of the game, there are no Goal or New Rule cards in play.

How to Play

Fluxx is a game that changes as you play it. Initially, players follow the Basic Rules (draw one card and play one card). As the game progresses, new rules are introduced via New Rule cards, making the game more complex.

Players take turns, going clockwise around the table. During their turn, a player draws the number of cards specified by the current rules, plays the number of cards required, discards down to the current Hand Limit (if any), and complies with the current Keeper Limit (if any). Optional actions allowed by New Rules, Keepers, etc., can be performed at any point during this sequence.

When playing a card, you may choose any card in your hand. If unsure about a card's effect, read the full text aloud as you play it.

Sample Game (in progress)

• Player A draws 1 card, has 5 cards in hand.
• Player A plays a "Draw 2" card, now required to draw 2 cards per turn.
• Player A draws 2 cards, now has 7 cards in hand.
• Player A plays a "Keep 3" card, setting the Keeper Limit to 3.
• Player A plays a "Action 1" card, performs the action stated on the card, and discards it.
• Player A plays a "Goal: 3 Keepers" card, setting the Goal to have exactly 3 Keepers.

Scoring and End of Game

The game continues until someone meets the conditions of the current Goal. That player wins instantly, regardless of whose turn it is. If multiple players meet the winning conditions simultaneously, the game continues until a single winner emerges.

If the Draw pile runs out, shuffle the Discard pile, turn it over to make a new Draw pile, and keep playing. Whenever something mentions a card in play, this refers to a card that is face up on the table but not in the discard pile.

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
