Game Overview

Skull King is an exciting trick-taking card game that originates from France and is perfect for 2 to 8 players. The game requires a Skull King deck of cards, which includes cards of four different colors (Perroquet, Carte au trésor, Coffre, and Drapeau pirate) along with special cards such as Pirates, Tigresse, Skull King, Sirènes, Fuite, Butin, Kraken, and Baleine blanche. Objective

The objective of Skull King is to be the player with the highest score at the end of the game. Each manche (round) won adds points to a player's score, and the player with the most points after 10 manches wins the game and becomes the Captain of the Seven Seas!

Setup

To set up the game, first remove 8 cards from the deck: the 4 Carte vierge (White card), les cartes Butin (2 Treasure cards), le Kraken (Kraken card), and la Baleine blanche (White Whale card). These cards are used with advanced rules.

Next, distribute to each player the aides de jeu (help cards) and a set of Rappel des mises (Mise reminder cards). Place any unused help cards and Mise reminder cards back in the box. After that, shuffle the remaining cards and prepare for the abordage (boarding).

How to Play

Skull King consists of 10 manches, with more cards distributed to each player as the game progresses. In the first manche, one card is distributed to each player; in the second, two cards are given out, and so on until 10 cards are distributed in the tenth manche. All previously played cards are shuffled and redistributed at the start of each new manche.

After learning the basics, you may choose to modify the number of manches and cards distributed according to your preference.

Parier (Betting)

Before each manche begins, players assess their hand and make a prediction about how many plis (tricks) they believe they can win in that round. Each player places one help card face down as their bet, with the value of the help cards correlating to the number of plis they predict they will win.

Plaisir et Perdre (Winning and Losing)

The player to the left of the donner (dealer) initiates the first pli by playing a card face-up in the center of the table. Players, moving clockwise, then play one card each, attempting to outbid their opponents with higher cards or special cards.

When all players have played their cards, the player who played the highest card (or the player with the most powerful card if multiple players played the same high card) wins the pli and takes the center pile of help cards. In case of a tie, the player who initially played the first card in that round wins the pli.

If a player plays a Fuite (Escape) card, they do not win the pli but also do not lose any help cards as their bet is protected. However, if all players play a Fuite or a Tigresse en tant que fuite, the player who initially played the first card in that round wins the pli.

Débutant (Starting Player)

When a player starts a new pli, they have the option to play either a card of any color or a special card. If a special card is played, the player to their left determines the suit for the current pli. If a player starts with a Pirate, Skull King, Tigresse en tant que pirate, Kraken, or Baleine blanche, there is no suit for that pli, and all other players can play any card they choose.

Scoring and End of Game

At the end of each manche, players compare their help cards to the number of plis they predicted they would win. If a player correctly guessed the exact number of plis they won, they receive bonus points equal to the total value of all the help cards in the center pile. If a player underestimated or overestimated the number of plis they won, they lose bonus points equal to the difference between their prediction and the actual number of plis they won.

The game continues until 10 manches have been played, after which the player with the highest score is declared the winner and becomes the Captain of the Seven Seas!

Common Variants

Players may choose to modify the rules by playing with different numbers of players, using advanced cards such as Butin, Kraken, and Baleine blanche, or adopting alternative betting systems.

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Forgetting to remove the 8 cards from the deck before starting the game.
  2. Failing to assess your hand properly when making predictions for each manche.
  3. Playing too aggressively, especially as a beginner, and betting more plis than you can reasonably expect to win.
  4. Ignoring the special powers of Pirates, Tigresse, Skull King, Sirènes, and Fuite cards during gameplay.
  5. Failing to understand the rules for determining the suit when a special card is played at the start of a pli.
