Game Overview

Objective

Setup

Each player is dealt 11 cards, and the remaining cards are placed in a face-down stock pile in the center of the table. The top card of the stock pile is turned over to start the discard pile. How to Play

During your turn, you draw one card from the stock pile and discard one card from your hand onto the discard pile. Before making a meld, you may draw additional cards from the stock pile until you have enough cards for the meld or until you reach 13 cards in your hand.

A valid meld consists of three or more cards of the same natural rank (A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4) or wild cards (jokers and deuces). Wild cards can be used as substitutes for any natural card. Threes have special functions that vary depending on the version of Canasta being played.

A meld of seven cards is called a "canasta". If all the cards in it are natural, it is called a "natural" or "pure" or "clean" or "red canasta"; if it includes one or more wild cards, it's called a "mixed" or "dirty" or "black canasta".

The first turn during a hand when a partnership puts down one or more melds is their initial meld. To make the initial meld for your partnership, you must meet a certain minimum count requirement in terms of the total value of cards that you put down. In some versions, this requirement can be met using both cards from your hand and the top card of the discard pile.

Scoring and End of Game

Scoring in Canasta is based on the cards melded and the type of canastas formed. Natural canastas score 500 points each, while mixed canastas score 300 points each. Individual cards (Aces, twos, and threes) are worth their face value when used in a meld.

The game ends when a team reaches the predetermined number of points or when all the cards in the stock pile have been drawn and no more melding can be done. The team with the higher score wins.
