Briscola Rules

Briscola is a popular trick-taking card game, originating from Italy and often played with Italian cards, which feature suits of coins (denari), cups (coppe), batons (bastoni), and swords (spade). The game can be played by two to six players, making it versatile for various social gatherings. You can purchase the Italian Briscola deck on Amazon to get started with this classic game.

Objective

The objective of Briscola is to score at least 61 points during a game, and the first player or team reaching that score wins. Games often end in a draw when both players or teams reach 60 points, and typically Briscola is played best of three or five games.

Setup

The dealer shuffles the deck and deals three cards to each player in two-player Briscola. In four-player Briscola, each pair plays as a team, with partners sitting face to face. The remaining card (the seventh) is turned face up near the undealt cards, which define the Briscola suit for the game. The Briscola suit is the trump suit and takes all other cards, regardless of their rank.

How to Play

  1. In two-player Briscola, the non-dealer (Player A) starts by leading one of their three cards. Player B plays a card and wins or loses the trick based on the following rules:
    • If both players play the same suit as the first card led, the winner is the player with the higher card.
    • If Player B plays a different suit but neither player plays Briscola (trump), Player A wins the trick.
    • If Player B plays a different suit and one or both players have Briscolas, the player of the higher Briscola wins the trick.
  2. After each trick, players draw cards from the undealt pile in turn, with the winner of the trick drawing first, followed by the loser. The game continues until all the cards are played and points are counted.
  3. In four-player Briscola, play proceeds counter-clockwise, with each player playing any card. If no one plays a Briscola, the highest card of the suit led wins the trick. If one or more players play a Briscola, the highest Briscola wins.
  4. When the undealt cards are used up, the next player draws the Briscola card, and the game continues without drawing until all the cards have been played.

Scoring and End of Game

Each player takes their pile of won cards and counts up the points according to the point scale: Ace (11), Three (10), King (4), Queen (3), Jack (2). The player with more points wins, or if each has 60, it is a draw.

Common Variants

  • Some people play that if the turned-up card indicating the trump suit is an ace or three, the card is put back in the middle of the deck and another card is turned up.
  • Some play that the winner is the first player to reach 120 points, which may require two deals, one by each player.

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting that there is no obligation for the second player to play a card of the same suit as the first card or to trump it, just because they can. The second player is free to play any of their cards.
  • Not understanding the card ranking, which defines which card wins a particular trick: Ace, Three, King, Queen, Jack, 7, 6, 5, 4, 2 (or Ace, Three, King, Jack, Queen, 7, 6, 5, 4, 2, depending on the region).
  • Not realizing that visual signals or limited conversation can be used to communicate with partners in some versions of Briscola.
