Dragon Ball Super Card Game: A Fun and Exciting Trading Card Game

The Dragon Ball Super Card Game (DBSCG) is a collectible trading card game based on the popular anime series, Dragon Ball Super. The game allows players to collect and battle with characters, events, and locales from the Dragon Ball universe. It can be played by two players and requires the official Dragon Ball Super Card Game deck which can be found on Amazon here.

Objective

The objective of the game is to reduce your opponent's life points to zero while maintaining a positive life point total yourself. Each player starts with 50 life points, and when a player's life points reach zero or less, they lose the game.

Setup

  1. Shuffle each player's deck of cards and place it face-down in the Deck Area (3-2).
  2. Draw five cards from your deck and place them in your Hand (3-3).
  3. Place an energy marker on the Energy Area (3-8) for each card in your starting hand with a cost of one or higher.
  4. Choose one Leader Card (10-1), shuffle it, and place it face-down in the Leader Area (3-5). Flip the Leader Card to its Active Side (1-8-1-2) to begin the game.
  5. Place an energy marker on the Energy Area for each card with a cost of one or higher shown on your Leader Card.
  6. Place all remaining cards in your Deck Area.
  7. Place four energy markers on the Energy Area (3-8). These represent the starting Energy pool for both players.

How to Play

The game is played in turns, each consisting of a Charge Phase, Main Phase, and End Phase. During the Charge Phase, players may draw cards, and during the Main Phase, players can use their cards and skills to attack, defend, and manipulate the game state.

  1. Charge Phase:

    • Draw one card from your Deck Area and add it to your Hand (5-1).
    • If you have fewer than five cards in your Hand, draw additional cards until you reach five.
  2. Main Phase:

    • Choose actions from the list below and perform them in any order. You may perform each action multiple times if the card or effect allows it.
      • Paying costs (5-3) to activate skills or play cards from your Hand (5-4).
      • Using cards in Combos (5-6) for more powerful effects.
      • Activating [Activate], [Permanent], and [Auto] Skills (9-4, 9-5, 9-6).
  3. End Phase:

    • Check if either player has fulfilled the defeat conditions:
      • If there are no cards in your Life Area or Deck Area, you lose the game immediately (0-1-3-2).
      • If both players have fulfilled the defeat conditions simultaneously, the game ends in a draw (0-1-3-3).
    • Discard all remaining cards in your Hand and refill to five cards (5-7).

Here's an example: Player A has a Saiyan Saga Vegeta card with a cost of 2, an Earth-shattering Kamehameha card with a cost of 3, and a Fusion Reborn Gogeta card with a cost of 5 in their hand. They decide to play the Saiyan Saga Vegeta (cost: 2) and pay 1 energy marker from the Energy Area. Then, they activate the Earth-shattering Kamehameha (cost: 3) by paying 2 energy markers and using it in a combo with the Saiyan Saga Vegeta for a powerful attack against Player B.

Scoring and End of Game

The game continues until one player fulfills the defeat conditions or concedes. When the game ends, both players collect all of their physically owned cards and return them to their possession (0-1-3-6).

Common Variants

There are several variant rules that can be used to change the pace and strategy of the game. Some common variants include:

  1. Deck Size: Players can agree to reduce or increase the starting deck size for a more challenging or strategic experience.
  2. Life Point Adjustment: Players can adjust life point totals to make the game quicker or longer, depending on their preference.
  3. Forbidden Cards: Players can agree to ban specific cards from the game to create a more balanced environment.

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Neglecting the Charge Phase: It's essential to draw cards during the Charge Phase as it allows you to have more options during your Main Phase.
  2. Ignoring Combos: Using cards in Combos can significantly boost their power and should be utilized when possible.
  3. Not Understanding Card Text: Familiarize yourself with the card text, especially energy costs, skills, and conditions, as they determine how and when you can use each card.
